Postdoctoral researcher Junzhao Sun
Chinese Junzhao Sun (D.Eng.) moved to Oulu in the year 2000 and has been working in MediaTeam since. Sun received his doctorate degree in Computer Science from the Harbin Institute of Technology in 1999.
Between 2000 and 2001 Sun worked in the former Computer Telephony Integration team. After the reorganization of MediaTeam he began conducting postdoctoral research in MediaTeam as the leader of the Packet Networks research group and contributed to the project work of the Red Skins project and CAPNET program.
In August 2006, Sun was appointed as an Academy Research Fellow for the duration of five years. His daily activities include literature searching, reading and surveying, developing new ideas, new method elaborating and validating, writing and publishing scientific papers. Other activities include establishing new connections, seeking for collaborations, contributing to the community by taking commitments like review tasks, looking for new funding opportunities and so forth.
Junzhao Sun sees the research areas carried out in MediaTeam as fresh and exciting, and the team keeps up with the most advanced development of the research field. The team is young, active, and productive. Dr. Sun regards the research atmosphere of MediaTeam as open, and thinks that creative innovation is greatly encouraged. “MediaTeam projects are cutting-edge, and funding is good. The team has a wide range of partners for cooperation, from both the industry and the academy, domestic and foreign. The communication inside and the networking outside are smooth” Sun explains.
In his own research, Dr. Sun concentrates on a cross-layer optimization for sensor networks. The general objective of the work is to bridge the gap between the technologies needed for modeling, processing and networking by investigating high-level cross-layer optimization techniques in a top-down fashion. In particular, Sun has been working on query processing and data gathering issues in wireless sensor networks, by trying to develop new algorithms for the adaptive management of data collection with application-level QoS requirements.
International conferences have taken Sun around the word, for example to countries like USA, Germany and Singapore. It is important to him that MediaTeam offers good possibilities to attend international conferences. In the conferences he has presented his accepted papers, and sometimes acted as a session chair to coordinate the presentations in a technical session. Dr. Sun sees international conferences as an integral part of working in a research group. “It is also a way of getting to know new researchers from all over the world, to exchange ideas and discuss with people on technical issues, and to find out potential chances of future collaboration”, Sun concludes.
