Postgraduate student Otso Kassinen
Otso Kassinen is a postgraduate student in MediaTeam and is therefore pursuing the highest academic degree. Postgraduate students have already gained a higher academic degree but continue studies of their field until they achieve doctorate. In MediaTeam, post-graduate students work as researchers. Otso Kassinen´s field and major is Information Technology but there are also researchers coming from different backgrounds. Kassinen has worked in MediaTeam since 2004 and is currently working as a researcher in two projects.
Kassinen describes MediaTeam as a pleasant working environment where working hours are flexible and atmosphere is good. “The co-workers and managers are relaxed and smart people. The bureaucracy of a large organization is, however, sometimes annoying. The target quality of research is high and in publishing activity we aim for respected magazines and conferences”.
Kassinen´s personal area of research is Wireless Networks with emphasis on Peer-to-Peer Networks and other techniques of the application layer. The preliminary title of his doctoral dissertation is "Efficient Middleware for Resource Management in Mobile Peer-to-Peer Systems". Kassinen has received grants for his research from the Emil Aaltonen Foundation, Nokia Foundation and Tauno Tönning Foundation. Kassinen is also a member of Infotech Oulu graduate school.
The job description of a postgraduate student working as a researcher also includes taking part in project work. Kassinen allocates his contribution to two MediaTeam projects: DECICOM and ExpeShare. “The project work is composed of programming and planning application scenarios and test drives. In addition, the work includes meetings with the project team and with representatives of interest groups”, Kassinen describes. Part of the work is also presenting the outcome of the research in international scientific conferences and working as a course assistant for a couple of courses of the department.
