Lightweight middleware architecture for mobile phones.
Proc. 2005 International Conference on Pervasive Systems and Computing, Las Vegas, NE, 147-153.

We suggest a lightweight middleware architecture that supports the development of ubiquitous applications and services for mobile phones. The architecture fulfills the requirements that we have found to be essential in this application area: interoperability, discoverability, location transparency, adaptability, and context-awareness. Based on this architecture, we have implemented a middleware in native C++ language on a Symbian operating system, which is a widely used open platform in mobile phones. The middleware requires only 50 KB of memory and is hence suitable for resource-constrained mobile devices. We have built on top of the middleware a prototype, which consists of applications in the mobile phone and several services in the environment. The first experiments verify that the middleware operates well and offers a good basis for future development.
