The proliferation of video content on the Internet, from both service providers and consumers, is placing great strain on existing public infrastructures and slowing many services to the point of unusability. The ITEA 2 ACDC project proposes to tackle this problem using the resources of ‘cloud computing’, which offers practically limitless resources from an online virtual infrastructure. A successful outcome could pave the way for a range of new services and applications based on semantic-knowledge technologies. The goal of the ACDC project is to research, develop and demonstrate an adaptive content delivery cluster and intelligent user-aware applications with new business models. The project aims at novel user-aware multimedia and entertainment applications, such as TV (IPTV, Web TV/Internet TV and Mobile TV), on demand (Video, Entertainment), personal video recording and targeted advertising services over variety of networks to different terminals (STB, PC, Mobile) with semantic knowledge based adaptation, personalization and anticipation features. Semantic knowledge processing (e.g. knowledge extraction, reasoning and match-making) is known to be a computing intensive task and requires massive computing capacity if applied at large scale. As a technological enabler for user-aware multimedia and entertainment applications the project will research, develop and demonstrate a distributed computing infrastructure for large scale digital content and semantic knowledge processing, storage and delivery. Over the distributed computing infrastructure, the project will focus on software tools and a service platform to provide a development framework for user-aware applications. The software and service platform development will adopt Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) design principles with the target of Software-as-a-Service deployment that is in compliance with dynamic service distribution and management schemas. The semantic knowledge intermediation support of the software and service platform will be based on knowledge technologies such as domain ontology, semantic runtime models and semantically tagged content metadata for enabling new user aware applications and services over ACDC infrastructure. Furthermore the project will investigate and try out new business models for enabling user-aware multimedia and entertainment applications in form of demonstrations and field trial systems. The ACDC project is a part of the pan-European ITEA 2 program. See more information: http://acdc-itea.org/
