Open panOULU wlan awarded within the "100 Acts from Oulu"
Popular to both visitors and residents of Oulu, open-access panOULU wireless network celebrates its 10th anniversary. MediaTeam Oulu set an important seed to its establishment during the Rotuaari project in 2002-2003.
"100 Acs from Oulu" campaign has chosen panOULU as the number 50 of the 100 Acts from Oulu campaign.
On October 15, 2003, the City of Oulu, the University of Oulu, Oulu University of Applied Sciences and Oulun Puhelin Oy signed the panOULU cooperation agreement and merged their Wi-Fi visitor networks into one single network, which was named the panOULU (public access network OULU) network.
Over the years, the panOULU network concept has developed into a joint venture between five municipalities, four public organizations and various commercial operators, featuring a total of 1,440 access points. Considering the extent of the network relative to the size of the community, and the fact that it provides open (no registration or login required), free and unrestricted Internet access, the panOULU network is the largest network of its kind in the world. The network is accessed monthly by over 50,000 devices, a significant portion of which belong to people visiting Oulu.
The seed for the eventual creation of the panOULU network was planted during the MediaTeam -led Rotuaari project, a joint venture between Tekes (the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation), the City of Oulu and local industries that created the 20 access point-wide RotuaariWLAN network in the city center in 2002-2003, in order to provide stable Internet access to the people of the city. As a gift to the residents of the city, the City of Ouluís TAITO Oulu 400 program expanded the panOULU network so that by December 2007, it had grown by 400 new access points installed in public buildings and areas.
In fall 2009, ERDF and municipal funding resulted in the creation of the panOULUseutu network, which expanded the network with 200 access points to cover eight municipalities in the Oulu region.
Today, the main Internet connection and core services are provided in cooperation between the City of Oulu and the University of Ouluís Department of Computer Science and Engineering. Thanks to its unique cooperation principle, the cost of maintaining the network is less than one euro per resident per year for the City of Oulu.
