Mika Ylianttila IEEE Finland Section new Vice-Chairman
Professor Mika Ylianttila, who is working at MediaTeam Oulu research group, was chosen as the new vice chairman for the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Finland Section to the becoming two year period 2006 - 2007. Professor Tatu Koljonen from VTT was chosen as the chairman.
IEEE is probably the most influential technical research related engineering organization in the world. It sponsors yearly over 300 technical conferences and publishes 128 technical journals and magazines. It also defines several technical standards, from which most well-known are probably the Ethernet local area IEEE 802.3 and wireless local area IEEE 802.11 networking standards.
IEEE has organized its activities through nationally operating IEEE Chapters, which operate under the national sections. They organize and sponsor the most prestigious technical conferences. These conferences are known by the high quality and are thus respected by the researchers. IEEE Finland Section has about one thousand members. Biggest chapters in Finland Section are the IEEE Computer Chapter (C-16) and the IEEE Communications Chapter (COM-19).
Ylianttila is also a co-chair for Application and Services area in the becoming IEEE PIMRC (Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications) in Helsinki, 11. - 14.9.2006. PIMRC is a prestigious mobile technology conference held at the Finlandia hall. It is mainly organized the University of Oulu research unit CWC (Centre for Wireless Communications). It is expected that about thousand technical papers are submitted to the conference for review, from which only the best are selected for oral presentation. In addition to technical paper presentations, the conference program includes tutorials and technical key note speeches. Tutorials are free of charge for IEEE student members. PIMRC is sponsored by IEEE, Nokia, Texas Instruments and Elektrobit.
IEEE membership costs 130 $ (ca. 110 €); student membership is 25 $ (ca. 20 €). Members get discount for conference registration fees and IEEE publications. Membership costs are tax reductable in Finland. Student activities are organized by IEEE Student Branches. For example, IEEE Student Branch Oulu rewards yearly the best diploma thesis work with a 500 € prize.
IEEE has recently introduced a new membership class, Graduate Student Member. Graduate students get the same benefits as members but with a student price. For member status are eligible all those who have at least B.Sc degree from a university or polytechnic from IEEE dedicated area. If one does not have such degree or that is not from an IEEE dedicated area, one can apply membership if one has enough working experience from the field.
IEEE has also announced an ethical code for the technical field, pointing out ethical rules for the technical research and other activities. Thus IEEE promotes ethically sound technical scientific research globally.
