Puheen salaisuudet (Secrets of speech) introduces new directions in speech research

A recently appeared book edited by professor Antti Iivonen introduces new aspects of the phonetic features of speech.

The book is meant for university students. The eleven articles of the book deal with the following topics: the perception of speech, prosodic features of speech, foreign language spoken by Finns, Finnish spoken by foreigners, evolution of speech, a speaking individual and phonetic terminology.

Prosodic features of speech are considered in several articles. For example, academy researcher Juhani Toivanen working at MediaTeam writes together with professor Kari Suomi and researcher Riikka Ylitalo on the phonetic realisation of the Finnish sentence accent. Another article written together with the scientific director of MediaTeam, professor Tapio Seppänen, focuses on how prosodic features of speech could be utilised in Spoken Document Retrieval (SDR).

Puheen salaisuudet (Secrets of speech) is a suitable book for all interested in speech and phonetics: linguists, speech therapists, language and speech technologists and audiologists. The book also contains a comprehensive vocabulary of the basic terms of phonetics.
